Since there’s no direct bus service, your best bet is the train for budget travel, a rental car for flexibility, or a taxi/private transfer for convenience. We’ll break down each option below.

If you’re heading straight to the airport, the train is incredibly convenient, dropping you off right at Lamezia Terme Airport Station. I bought train tickets to get us from Tropea to the airport, but ended up taking a shuttle instead—though if you’re travelling light, the train is an easy and budget-friendly choice.
If you’re arriving by train, note that Tropea Station is a short uphill walk to the town centre, where you’ll find charming streets, historic sites, and plenty of things to do once you arrive.

Renting a car is the most flexible way to get from Lamezia Terme to Tropea. The drive takes about an hour, following the E45 and SS522 coastal road, which offers some incredible views along the way.
When we visited, we caught a ride with a friend who had rented a car at the airport. It turned out to be the prettiest and most convenient way to get there. We even made a few stops—pulling over for scenic views and taking a break in Pizzo for ice cream. While renting a car isn’t the cheapest option, it’s worth it if you want to explore at your own pace.

Taxis are available outside Lamezia Airport and Lamezia Centrale train station. The ride to Tropea takes about an hour, and fares typically range from €100–€120. Cash is preferred, though some drivers may accept cards.
Tip: Always confirm the price before getting in, as taxis in Calabria don’t always run on meters for long-distance trips.
Hotel Shuttles: A Similar Alternative
Many hotels in Tropea offer airport shuttle services, often for a similar price to taxis. The main difference is you must book in advance through your hotel. Some hotels include the transfer in room packages, so it’s worth checking before booking.

While we didn’t use a private transfer in Italy, we’ve booked them multiple times in other countries and always had a great experience. It’s a stress-free way to travel, especially when arriving in a new place after a long flight.
With private transfers, the driver is usually waiting at arrivals with a sign, making it easy to find them after a long flight. Prices are fixed and paid at booking, so there’s no need to worry about carrying cash, finding a card machine, or dealing with payment after a long travel day.

The best way to get from Lamezia to Tropea really depends on your budget, travel style, and flight schedule:
- Budget travellers? Take the train (€5–€10)—cheap, easy, and scenic.
- Families with light luggage? The train is a great option if you’re comfortable with public transport.
- Families with a lot of luggage? A private transfer (~€100) or hotel shuttle is more convenient.
- Exploring more of Calabria? Rent a car to stop at beaches and villages along the way.
- Early or late flights? A taxi or hotel shuttle might be the best choice for convenience.
Personally, I’d recommend the train for solo travellers and even for families, as long as you’re comfortable with European train travel and don’t have too much luggage. We’ve taken trains all over Europe with kids, and it’s always been an affordable and interesting experience—my kids loved trains at that age (and still do!).
That said, depending on your flight time, a hotel shuttle might be the better option. We took a shuttle back to Lamezia when we left Tropea because our flight was early in the morning. It wasn’t cheap, but it was stress-free, and I can see why many families would prefer that option.
But honestly, next time, I’d rent a car. There’s so much more you can see and explore around Tropea—and some of the best places to see in Calabria aren’t easy to reach without a car. Having the freedom to stop at beaches, small towns, and scenic spots along the way really changes the experience
