Best Things to Do in Lake Bohinj (+ Kid-Friendly Spots)

Lake Bohinj is one of Slovenia’s most stunning natural destinations. With crystal-clear alpine water, scenic hiking trails, and a peaceful atmosphere—all set against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Triglav—it’s the perfect alternative to nearby Lake Bled. While Bled is famous for its island church and castle, Bohinj offers a quieter, more local experience, with fewer crowds and endless opportunities to enjoy nature.

There are plenty of things to do in Lake Bohinj, whether you want to paddle across the lake, hike through the breathtaking Julian Alps, or just relax by the water. For us, it was one of the absolute highlights of our Slovenia road trip. After a few busy days of driving, Bohinj was the perfect place to slow down and soak in the scenery—with farmhouses across from our stay, quiet lakeside trails, and the kind of laid-back charm that makes you want to stay longer.

Why Visit Lake Bohinj?

Lake Bohinj isn’t just Slovenia’s largest natural lake—it’s also one of the most beautiful places in the country and one of the most peaceful. Surrounded by Triglav National Park, it’s the perfect place to slow down, get outside, and enjoy nature without the crowds. While Lake Bled gets most of the attention, Bohinj offers a quieter, more local feel, even in peak season.

It’s also a place where you don’t need a car to explore. Walking trails run along the lakeshore, through forests, and into nearby villages, where you’ll find family-run farms, traditional guesthouses, and a more laid-back way of life. And if you’re looking for adventure, there’s plenty to do—swim in the lake, rent a kayak, hike to a waterfall, or take the Vogel cable car for epic mountain views.

Whether you visit for a day or a few nights, Bohinj is the kind of place that makes you wish you had stayed longer.

Best Things to Do in Lake Bohinj

Lake Bohinj is an outdoor lover’s dream, with plenty of ways to enjoy the stunning scenery. While the crystal-clear lake is perfect for swimming and paddling, there are also scenic hikes, waterfalls, and panoramic mountain views to explore. Whether you’re looking for adventure or a quiet place to relax, here are the best things to do in Lake Bohinj.

1. Swim in Lake Bohinj

Yes, you can absolutely swim in Lake Bohinj! In fact, it’s one of the best places to swim in Slovenia, with calm, clean, and clear water, and surrounded by the Julian Alps. Since it’s a mountain lake, the water stays cool, but by July and August, it’s warm enough for a refreshing dip.

We visited in June, and while it was a bit chilly, the boys still jumped in—and stayed in longer than just a quick splash! Locals told us that by mid-summer, the water is much warmer and perfect for swimming.

There are several great spots around the lake to go for a swim. Most beaches are small pebbles rather than sand, but they’re great for relaxing by the water. Our personal favourite was a small beach near the campground, just a short walk from the boat dock. Another great spot is past Ukanc, near the Zlatorog Fairy Trail.

Two young boys wade into the clear, shallow waters of Lake Bohinj, Slovenia, surrounded by towering cliffs and forested slopes. The rocky shoreline contrasts with the dramatic alpine backdrop of steep, green-covered mountains under a cloudy sky.

2. Get Out on the Water

One of the best ways to experience Lake Bohinj is to actually get out on the lake. With calm, clear water and no motorized boats, it’s perfect for paddleboarding or kayaking.

Rentals are available in summer, so you can paddle across the lake, stop at quiet beaches along the north shore, or just float and take in the incredible views of the Julian Alps.

3. Walk (or Bike) Around Lake Bohinj

Similar to Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj has a scenic trail that winds around the shoreline—but with far fewer people and a more peaceful, natural feel. The 12 km loop takes you through forests, past quiet beaches, and along some of the best viewpoints around the lake. The trail is mostly flat and easy, making it perfect for walking or biking.

If you’re only walking one way, the northern side is the better choice—it’s more scenic, with beautiful lake views and peaceful stretches of forest. We walked the southern side, thinking it would be a quicker route, but it wasn’t as scenic as I’d expected. If you’re choosing just one section, I’d definitely recommend the northern trail instead.

Walking the full loop takes about 3–4 hours, but you can always walk partway, swim at a quiet beach, and take the boat back—a perfect mix of activity and relaxation.

4. Take a Traditional Wooden Boat Across the Lake

If you’re not up for walking the full loop around Lake Bohinj, the traditional wooden boat is a perfect way to see the lake from the water. Running between Ribčev Laz and Ukanc, this slow, scenic ride offers incredible mountain views and a peaceful way to experience the lake.

This was one activity my kids were most excited about in Bohinj – they had seen pictures of the boat beforehand and couldn’t wait to go. Luckily, it lived up to their expectations! The ride itself is beautiful and a local guide on board shares interesting facts and stories about the lake, pointing out things we might not have noticed, like the waterfall high midway across the lake.

Boats operate from April to early November, with departures from both ends of the lake. You can choose a one-way ticket and explore before walking back along the lakeshore, or opt for a round trip if you’d rather just enjoy the ride.

  • One-way tickets: €9 adults | €5.50 kids (6-14) | €8 seniors/students
  • Return tickets: €14 adults | €8.50 kids | €12.50 seniors/students
  • Dogs ride free!

We took the boat one way and walked back along the southern shore, which made for a great mix of relaxing and exploring. Whether you’re looking for an easy way to cross the lake or just want to sit back and take in the scenery, this is a great alternative to walking.

5. Hike to Savica Waterfall

If you know me, you know I love waterfalls – so when there’s one on our travels, I have to visit. Savica Waterfall, or Slap Savica, is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia, and while it isn’t a hidden gem, it’s definitely worth seeing. This unique waterfalls splits into two streams underground before cascading 78 metres into the pool below.

The majestic Savica Waterfall near Lake Bohinj, Slovenia, cascades dramatically down a rugged limestone cliff in two streams, converging into a powerful plunge into a turquoise pool below. The lush greenery clings to the steep rock walls, enhancing the natural beauty of this iconic alpine waterfall.

The waterfall is about a 20–30 minute uphill hike from the parking lot. The trail is well-maintained, with some great views of Lake Bohinj along the way. At the top, there’s a small viewing platform which offers a close-up look at the waterfall, but it can be crowded, so you might have to wait a bit for the view.

  • Getting there: A free shuttle runs from Lake Bohinj to Savica Waterfall in July and August. Outside of peak season, you’ll need to drive or hike (about an hour from Ukanc).
  • Entrance fees: €3–4 adults | €1.50–2 kids (7–14) | €2.50 students/seniors.

It’s not the most challenging hike, and with the scenery along the way, as well as the beautiful waterfall, you can see why it’s one of the top things to do in Lake Bohinj.

Just outside Ribčev Laz, Grmečica Falls is a quiet, lesser-known waterfall. It’s one of the few in the area where you can actually swim—if you don’t mind the icy water! The short walk from the parking area makes it an easy stop if you’re looking for something off the beaten path.

This waterfall just outside Ribčev Laz was recommended by our hosts at Hotel Gasperin. It’s not as popular as Savica, and when we visited, we were the only ones there. Grmečica Falls is one of the few waterfalls in the area that’s free to visit—and one of the only ones where you can actually swim.

But it’s cold—really cold, even for a Canadian. I walked in long enough for my kids to take a picture, but my feet were almost numb after though!

6. Take the Vogel Cable Car for Stunning Views

For some of the best views in the Bohinj area, take the Vogel Cable Car up into the Julian Alps. Known as a ski resort in winter, Vogel is just as impressive in summer, offering panoramic views of Lake Bohinj, Mount Triglav, and the surrounding mountains.

The ride takes 7 minutes to get to the top, and it’s an experience in itself, with spectacular views the whole way up. Once at the summit, you can set off on one of the hiking trails, grab a coffee at the mountaintop café, or simply take in the incredible scenery. In winter, Vogel transforms into a popular ski resort, with skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities—equipment rentals and lessons are available.

  • Cable Car Prices: One-way/Return
    • Adults: €22 / €29.50
    • Children (6+): €12 / €15
    • Seniors: €20 / €26

Even if you’re not hiking or skiing, it’s worth the ride just to stand at the top and take in the view—you won’t regret it.

7. Hike Through Mostnica Gorge

Just 3 km from Lake Bohinj, Mostnica Gorge is one of the most scenic hikes in the area. The Mostnica River has carved out a narrow, winding gorge, creating crystal-clear pools, small waterfalls, and wooden bridges that crisscross over the rushing water. If you’ve been to Vintgar Gorge near Lake Bled, this has a similar feel—but with fewer crowds.

The trail follows the river through the gorge before opening up into the Voje Valley, where you can turn back or continue hiking to Šum Waterfall (Mostnica or Voje Waterfall). The full hike to the waterfall takes about 2.5 hours one way, but if you stick to the gorge, it’s around a 2-hour round trip.

  • Entrance Fee: €4 adults | €2 children (7–14) | €2.50 seniors/students

8. Explore Ribčev Laz

Sitting on the eastern shore of Lake Bohinj, Ribčev Laz is the lake’s main village and a great place to explore. Its most famous landmark is the double-arched stone bridge leading to the Church of St. John the Baptist, a 13th-century church with a tall Baroque tower and some of the oldest frescoes in Slovenia.

Just below the bridge, the lakefront area is one of the best spots to take photos of the church, bridge, and mountains reflected in the water. While you’re there, look for the statue of Zlatorog, the legendary golden-horned chamois said to have guarded a hidden treasure in the surrounding mountains. This isn’t the only Zlatorog statue in Slovenia—another stands on the shores of Lake Jasna, near the start of the Vršič Pass.

After taking in the views, stroll through the village, stop at a café, or grab a bite to eat while soaking in the area’s natural beauty.

9. Follow the Zlatorog Fairy Tale Trail

The Zlatorog Fairy Tale Trail, named after the mythical creature mentioned above, is a fun, kid-friendly walk near Ukanc. This easy 2km loop winds past the lake and through the forest, passing several old houses along the way.

But the highlight of the trail is the Slovenian fairy tales you’ll discover along the way. Wooden boards along the route tell the stories of mythical creatures and local legends, with fun interactive elements at each stop—like playing music or solving simple challenges. Some of the activity stations are a bit worn, but it’s still a fun walk that lets kids learn about local legends while exploring nature.

One rings a set of hanging chimes while the other climbs a rustic structure next to a wooden sign featuring a whimsical character illustration and Slovenian text, all set beneath a large evergreen tree in a forested meadow.

More Things to Do at Lake Bohinj for Kids

If you’re visiting Lake Bohinj with kids, there are a few fun play areas that make great stops between hikes and exploring.

Playground in Ukanc

Near the parking lot in Ukanc, this small natural-style playground is a great spot for kids to run around. There’s a slide, balancing beams, and climbing structures, all made from wood. While there’s no shade, it’s a nice break before or after exploring the Zlatorog Fairy Tale Trail.

Treetop Play Area

For something more adventurous, head to Dragon Village, a trampoline net play area high in the trees. Built into the hillside near the campground, kids can walk up wooden ramps to a massive net stretched between the trees – but don’t worry, there’s netting along the sides to ensure safety.

I’m not sure whether my kids just really loved the trampoline, or they liked being up so high, but either way, they had loads of fun playing on it – and I had a hard time getting them to leave!

Where to Stay in Lake Bohinj

If you’re looking for a place to stay at Lake Bohinj, there are three small towns around the lake that all offer accommodation: Ribčev Laz, Ukanc, and Stara Fužina. Each one has its own charm, depending on the experience you’re looking for.

Ribčev Laz

Located on the eastern end of the lake, Ribčev Laz is the most convenient option, with more restaurants, shops, and easy access to activities. We stayed at Hotel Gasperin Bohinj, just a short walk from the lake, and loved it. The rooms were spacious and clean, breakfast was excellent, and small touches like a 24-hour honesty bar and a shelf of books to borrow made it feel welcoming. The owners were also incredibly helpful, giving us great local recommendations.

Another great option is Hotel Bohinj, a 4-star hotel just steps from the lake, offering panoramic mountain views, a restaurant, and a swimming pool. It’s one of the most highly-rated hotels in the area, but it books up fast, so reserving early is a good idea.

Ukanc

For a quieter, more nature-focused stay, Ukanc is a great choice. Camp Bohinj, located right on the lake, offers tent and trailer camping with incredible views. It’s first-come, first-serve, so you’ll need to check availability on arrival. Another great choice are these one bedroom chalets that are close to Savica Waterfall and only steps away from the playground and fairy tale trail.

Lake Bled vs. Lake Bohinj: Which One is Better?

Lake Bled gets most of the attention, but Lake Bohinj offers a quieter, more natural escape. If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere, a famous island church, and a castle overlooking the lake, Bled is the better choice. But if you prefer fewer crowds, stunning alpine scenery, and a more relaxed, outdoorsy vibe, Bohinj is hard to beat.

Each lake has something unique to offer, so if you have time, it’s worth visiting both. For a full breakdown of how they compare, check out our guide: Lake Bled vs. Lake Bohinj: Which One Should You Visit?
